The Amazing Amazon
The Amazon is the biggest tropical rainforest in the world with the largest river basin, which accounts for 15-16% of the water that flows into the sea. Located in South America, its land area spreads across many regions including Brazil, Peru, Columbia and Guyana. It is home to hundreds of thousands of different species such as 1,300 types of birds, 3,000 varieties of fish, 430 types of mammals and an astonishing 2.5 million kinds of insects. The Amazon is sometimes referred to as ‘the lungs of the Earth’ because it produces more than 20% of the world’s supply of oxygen.
